Chapter 2 of Fast Food Nation: "Your Trusted Friends"
{to pair with a lesson on advertising, possibly along with the book Born to Buy by Juliet B. Schor}
This chapter can link into a lesson on Advertising: Big Names, and Research, Ethos, Kairos and Pathos, along with numerous examples of how the Fast Food Industry markets particularly to children. In the exercise below, numerous laminated advertisements will be passed around to groups of students who will then decide for themselves what messages are being sent to the public.
Advertisement Exercise: 1. Get in groups. This is your “Ad team" 2. Pick a recorder 3. Decide amongst your team:
A. What Persuasive Strategy is this ad using? It can be more than one!
1) Big Names- Important people or experts 2) Logos- Facts, numbers and information 3) Pathos- Inciting an emotion- trying to make the reader happy, sad or angry 4) Ethos- Persuading the audience through trust and belief 5) Kairos- Inciting a sense of urgency- “Last chance sale!” 6) Research- Citing research studies and findings in order to convince.
B. What is the Ad trying to “claim”? What is it trying to convince us to do directly?
C. What are the subtle messages? Is it trying to convince us something else?
4. Each team will get to look at every ad. When we have gotten through every ad, the presenter from your team will explain one ad to the class.

5. Then take a look at this video and answer these questions:
A. What was the purpose of the "nag factor" study? B. What were the findings, and how were they used? C. According to the advertising executives that were interviewed, what is the main purpose of advertisments? D. Share your opinion: Is advertising to children ethical?
