INQUIRY QUESTION:

How has the development of a "fast food culture" affected various aspects of our lives?

ABOUT THIS WIKI:

ffn.jpgThis website was created for a graduate school project and is meant to be used by any teacher. Everything you find on this site is based around Eric Schlosser's nonfiction book, Fast Food Nation. We have collected a series of other texts that could be read in conjunction with classroom discussions of this book and provided ideas for implementation; all are meant to shed light and contribute further insight to the above inquiry question.

As Schlosser traces the development of fast food restaurants in his book, we want students to consider not only the implications of the concerns he puts forth (poor treatment of workers, easily spread disease, poor nutrition, etc), but also the implications of this culture in other areas of our society. For example:

Has a "fast food culture" affected families? (Do we spend less time together and more time working/watching TV/etc?)
Has this culture affected education?
How has it impacted national psychology?
Government?
The economy?

Fast food (and the accompanying mentality) does have several positive factors - convenience and cheapness among them. Yet have we, as a society, seriously and thoughtfully considered the ways fast food has shaped the development of our nation? Let's see what all these texts might have to say.
